Finding it really hard at the mo? I'm a self employed joinery sub-contractor & it's getting slower & slower getting the work in....

No-ones building houses (coz no-ones buying em) & theres 100's of other tradesmen out there after the same work?

Turning into bit of a nightmare with christmas coming up, which traditionally a slow time for us anyway :S

Yep, I work for a subby-architectural metal (balconies, staircases etc)

Although we've not been biten yet, its fooking quiet out there...We arent getting half as many tenders in as we did last year-we were manic as fuck this time last year!

We've got work on for the next year, so hopefully if we get gotten then it wont be so badly...its a fucker.

No ones lending + no one building = building trade tits up :(

Saying that though, Ive noted most of our work of late is doing colleges, doctors, day care centers hospitals and the like and there is still alot of work going on-just not in private sectors like apartments and houses (where all the money is-lol)

Know where your coming from mate , there is a strong possibility of myself being made redundant next month as a Printer.

Same applies to me as in the no work out there , thought i would go to see if i could get my old job back (joiner by trade) big company.

Not a sniff just laid 65 off.

No work since april, jesus  My house would of been repossesed by now.

Just sorted a job on a school in Sheffield today thank fook, after a fortnight of nowt (got knock back on at least 25 sites). 130 mile round trip everyday, but beggars can't be choosers.

Starting to remind me of the 90's recession is this, but then i was just out of my apprenticiship & no-one wanted me. Had to work cash in hand for 25 beans a day.....At least interest rates aint 15% like they were then! (yet?)

At the moment iv landed on my feet, im helping a mate with the conversion of two engine houses into dwellings, its being filmed for grand designs, so he is fairly keen to crack on and get it finished, so long as he doesnt run out of cash im in work:thumbsup: The pinch is being felt seriously in newquay, many major development sites empty, and a very noticable fall in prices for all types of housing. Still some penthouse apartment thingys still being sold between 500000 and 1000000:| I guess those people got money to burn:confused:
If people in the building trade can survive this period(with some savings intact), there will be opportunities for buying cheep development property when it all hits rock bottom, and then use your skills to make a tidy profit.
me n the missus sold our place a couple of years ago and moved into a van so we could take advantage of our equity, its not that luxurious now, but having savings and no debt means we can be spontanious and invest in bargain bricks and mortar when the time is right. Best of luck everyone, within a recession lies opportunity for the speculator:eyebrow:

Suppose the answer to the original question is yes and no.

We specialise in the petrochemical industry and we're busier than ever at the moment, so fortunately this hasn't hit us. I've never worked in the housing market though - in fact it's totally different work to the stuff we do.

Hope you guys get sorted soon:thumbsup:

ive been working in the offshore game now for nearly 11 years, got laid off in 99 when the oil price fell to $6 a barrel but since then ive never been out of work,in 2007 i changed to working out of the UK and have recently been told i have work to see me through the next 6-7 years covering some of the West Africa regions, funny thing is we are very short of staff,i have been asked on numerous occassions to do overtime,i feel for you guys with the trades in the UK,im having work done on my house at the mo and i got bombarded with letters from contractors offering me their services,

best of luck anyway guys i hope things pick up in the UK for all our sakes

Seeing as this is going offshore based, you can also register on Oil and Gas Jobs | Oil and Gas Recruitment and receive job alerts in the most recession proof industry on earthTM.

It is surprising how many of my mates have emigrated to the middle east with their families over the last few years into the oil industry from a construction background. They are desperate for grafters. Pays really, really well too, as Jiglo and Tag will no doubt verify.

Good luck guys.

Nice to read im not the only one in this position. Im not in the building game, but last month was told either redundancy after 15 years employment (rock bottom payout that the government suggest) or a £375 a month paycut. Had to take the paycut (already 2 million out of work), I now have zero disposible income, every penny I earn just goes towards bills, and am now looking to work the weekends. With Xmas coming up, everything thing is looking grim. So any weekend work in Wirral / Chester / Liverpool please PM me ...

Yeah...
I don't even wanna contemplate the equity situation...
Fingers fucking crossed is all i'm saying cos I need a new mortgage deal in the next few months.

There are some belting deals about though so long as you're not taking the piss on LTV...

Lifetime trackers at BOE + <1%... Not too bad...
