One, is this board speed slow over the last three or four weeks or what? All the images always just chunk down in slow motion. I have no programs running up bandwidth, whats wrong with it?

Two, how do I lock a user out of drives/directories if I share my computer via another 'user account'. Ive looked in the help file, but I cant find it. When I right click properties the drive and click share root, I then get an option to hide "To make these folders and sub folders private, check this bos so only you have access" - HOWEVER, the bloody thing is greyed out!.

Although I set up my computer when I baught it, I dont log in as "administrator" for some reason, but I still have administrative privalidges, is this whats wrong? If so, how can I fix it so I log in as administrator?

Thanks

Sirius.

Hi, Ill be blunt then, lol.

I have my computer in my room, it runs windows XP pro. Its the only PC in the house with internet connection. I switch on my computer and log in with my first name and my password I have chosen.

I want to create an account so my parents can use my computer, Ive made an account called Family, and you choose 'family' on the windows splash screen to log in as 'family'.

I then want to lock off drives and access to files/folders and programs of my choice so they dont see personal data, pornography collection, favourites, bookmarks, and that my log in/password prompts for intenet sites (such as this and others I go on) dont work for them when they use my computer.

The box I think will let me do this seems to be greyed out, I dunno why, maybe its for some reason im not labeled "Administrator" of my own computer - but I dont know how thats happened or how I can change that, it defaulted to a 'user name' when I installed the Windows, and the Administrator aspect was not apparent. It may not even be that though!.

All I can find is that greyed out checkbox, and options to 'hide' folders over a home network, only its not a network, its just simply another user, and this doesnt seem to work.

Cheers

Cheers m8, I tried that, however I still cant get it to hide the drive or directories when the other account is logged into :(. Theres a shedload of options in there  ......I dont wanna risk losing access to it myself if you know what I mean - I thought I had done at one point.

I dunno what to do, I suppose Ill have to 'ace' everything up in advance and password protect it. :(

Bloody computers.

right click properties on the folder and select hidden.

Go into any folder click tools \ folder options \ view \ tick do not show hidden files and folders.

This will hide all folders you have select as hidden. only when you request them to be them not to be hidden i.e tools \ folder options \ view \ show hidden files and folders, will everyone be able to see them.

Unless your family start snooping on your PC they will never find them.

Log on as Administrator and Start \ Control Panel \ Accounts, give your name admin rights so you can log on as yourself and unshare folders \ drives unles you are an administrator

Thats the best I can help ya with fella :)

To make your folders private

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer). If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
  3. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
  4. Double-click your user folder.
  5. Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
  6. On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.
note.gif
Notes

  • To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
  • This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
  • When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.
  • You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS. For information about converting your drive to NTFS, click Related Topics.

Nagh thats wrong, try right click on properties on any folder and you have at the bottom of the general tab a section that says

Attributes - Read only <<<<<<<, underneath this is the option for hidden you just tick it.

You can do this on any folder but not folder short cuts

don't know much about this but that why of hiding folders, it's pretty easy to undo isn't it, not very secure...

as for the board speed give the old style board a go and see if it speeds it up, works for me.

I agree with Grad about hiding folders not being secure, it all depends on whos going to be going on and also if there going to look for stuff, if there not going to start looking then all you need is for the folders to be out of sight cause they wont need to look in hidden folders for anything so there shouldnt be a problem.

You could always download a program like winguard and get the crack for it. There are loads of these types of programs. They let u password protect folders, dirs, controlpanels , internet etc. http://www.winguardpro.com/

Dont know if it the solution your after but the specs are on that link. then u can just download the crack.
