and all without the aid of drugs....

apparently that aint really true - they caned the speed - If you read Russ Winstanleys book on the The Wigan Casino - there are stories about how clubbers used to knock off a chemists on the way there to get their hands on the pills- blues/dexys etc (which in those days were prescribed for dieting etc)

I take it you're being sarcastic Ripley?

Only saw the start of it, but I taped it. The certainly new how to get down those crowds. I'm sure they could of picked someone more suitable than Trevor Nelson to do the programme.

I saw it, was really disappointed.
Thought Trev dissed the North a bit, said how scared he was of loads of Wigan skidheads who were white, and moaned about it 'better be good', then he spent 45 mins kissing up to the southern scene. Bloody typical southern media bias.
Someone needs to write something decent about Northern soul in Wigan and get it made for telly, its such a great story.

Fecking wicked program.......grew up listening to Northen Soul, my uncle(Richard Collier) use to play at KGB's & the twisted wheel , and I have a friend i use to work with who was a casino regular, he always drags me to the Northen Soul reunion nights when im up in York, and have to say........some of the finest dam music ever made.

My all time fav Northen Soul tune's

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love
Doobie Gray - Out on the floor

Got to agree with Ed about Trevor Nelson, if he is the soul dj expert, how the feck did he only know 2 tunes......WTF, Northen soul was the original all nighters of the North......get a grip man for feck sake

does the book mention "gerry Marshall" he's my dads uncle and i was told that he either ran wigan casino or used to own it, i would like read up about him if it does?

 .....No way Dee Dee, Gerry Marshall was the sahsa of NS m8....my m8 never shuts up about him.....Get yourself a copy of this book

Dave Hasslem - Adventures on the wheels of steel

There is a big section on Northen Soul.....and Gerry gets tunes of mentions

wicked program.......just goes to show where us Northen folk get our love for a good anthem from.......it's in our blood, and always will be.........hope im still dancing that good when i touch my mid 40's

i just been readin a bit about that northern soul thing in wigan - proper interesting it is. (and yes before you say out i can read!!)

one bit that caught my attention was

Close on 2,000 people had a whale of a time - and didn't they give owner Gerry Marshall an ovation. It started with cheers and handclaps and ended with foot stamping and went on for a couple of minutes

good to see ya following in ya uncles footsteps dee dee. with your robot dancing ive seen you do at maximes i can sense the hand clapping and foot steps not too far away. good on ya girl ;)

:D

Those geezers can groove!

Come on then, who is going to put a Northern Soul mix up in the mixes section?!

Do you reckon Dexy's midnight runners were names after those gary's?

Toodle lang a lang, toodle lang a lang (much better than Come on Eileen)
