I remeber some people recently asking for pointers with regard to scratching, so I thought that this video (despite being rather advanced) shows what is happening with the crossfader in relation to the manipulation of the vinyl. Ed

It's good in so much as he's fast and has good skills in it, but for anyone who has never scratched before, that wouldn't be much help as you can't see in detail, the fader useage.

Is it me, or is that sort of scratching, the advanced crab patterns, not actually sound in time with things rhythmically?

I remember hearing nipper at hazy and thinking his scratching was a bit pants and not in time with the tune he was scratching over, which, when it's house music, makes it that bit more trickier, as the music is faster of course.

Of course it could be that I'm stuck in my ways in the old, old skool of scratching styles, along with Mark XTC...

I would agree it's definitely not for the absolutely beginner, but I thought it showed little bits where you could see how the crossfader was being used in relation to the vinyl, which is fairly rare on these type of clips...Nice viewing though. I would agree that with this type of scratching, as a result of showboating for want of the better word, the scratching goes out of time with the music. I think when scratching over house tunes, less is more, and keeping it in time is way more important. Ed

Most of us use special sample records for it that in most cases arent that rare or expensive so you dont get bothered so much about the wear. Occassionally i like to use the beginning of a record but dont do it too often as like you say it willl damage the vinyl.

Am loving learning this but it takes hrs and hrs of practice and i am by no means any good but its fun keeping at it.

I still seem to feel like my hands are connected to each other not as much as when i started. Anyone got any tips tp help that.

Also one other question i have been meaning to ask especially to jammer. I have my decks quite high. I would say about 1.25 - 1.5 m high at my house so my arm is at a slightly awkward angle on the fader and vinyl. I am moving soon so am thinking of not having the decks on the same set of drawers i have them on now and building a deckstand. Will it help it the setup is lower than it is now. I sometimes feel like i cant handle the fader properly as my hand is resting on the mixer where as in loads of clips most peoples hand only touch the actual fader.

i wouldnt go to the hassle of buying a new deck stand mate, simply stand on a couple of phone books to compensate in the height differential

Less is more, deffo agree with that, as scratching isn't to everyone's taste, some people hate it, as they think it's just noise!

Some deck stands I think are too high, depends on what you feel comfortable with though. For me, I prefer to have decks at just above waist height (that way you can control the fader with your knob, should you wish to, ala DMC Championships )

Regards to your hand on the mixer, again it's what you feel comfortable with, but if your hand is getting in the way of the fader, then that might be a problem?

It's all about practice and trying out differing things, some of the best results often come from mistakes, same with making music, trying different things out when you least expect it can lead to something that's top and catches you by surprise.

thanks - i was only wondering as i know some of the lengths some people seem to go to get some records that to scratch on some of the rare songs would be mad in my eyes espec when i can see how much some of it is going for!! I did think that maybe you use old records that it would not gut you too much to scratch on but wasnt sure.

Scratching, along with Chinese gymnasts and breakdancers is one of those things I just getcompletely mesmorised by!

all of you out there that are into scratching should really go take a look on youtube at QBert or mix master mike, its amazing to watch them scratch live !! it's like how the F**K do they move their hands that quick ???:|
