Hi,i got a good question but might sound a bit silly but is a serious thing to me,my name has always been Monty and want to keep it like that i have noticed on You Tube there is another Monty as he is DJ in a club playing Trance music and i am making Trance so he could get the credit for my hard work.My question is can i buy my name so no one can use it at least the way it is spelt......

Dunno, it is a good and valid question though.
It could be worse though Monty, you could have someone using the same name as you on hospital radio, interviewing Peter André.....:|
Radiowaves - User

Believe me, that aint me interviewing him.
If it was me, I would be likely to put Moff's rant in Human Traffic into action if I met "Peter fackin' André...."

Ok! i understand this is a silly question to some maybe you don't make music i duno,i would'nt be bothered if it was a DJ Monty who makes Hip Hop but it is a DJ Monty who is DJing Trance same as what i am making so they will cross each other get my point?

Yeah good point. I honestly don't know where you would stand on this. But your music can be definately copyrighted. Possibly drop the DJ infront of your name? (Just an idea like ie if you search for DJ Slipmatt on MySpace for example there are a couple, the actual DJ Slipmatt is just Slipmatt on there)

I don't see why this would be diff to any other type of artist- you see bands winning the rights to names all the time. I guess its like a trademark or summat eh. Perhaps if you registar it as belonging to you, not sure how- but you can do. You might have to prove that you were the first though in order to 'own' it.

My offiicial tunes i have made start from around 1997 and are on discogs so really he should not be using my name as i have has releases on Slamin Vinyl and been on Albums in HMV etc so when he is djing he could be getting credit for it and i am starting my own label soon and got great plans for it and i am making Trance and he is djing Trance so you can see why it is a problem to me,i think Brisk registered his name but if you know of any links where i can register my name please give them me..Thanks....

Theres loads of Monty's on Discogs!!

some released tracks before you so should they get the name first??

You can try copyrighting it but if you take someone to court to try and get them to stop using the name it will cost you more than you can afford, ever, no matter how many Slammin Vinyl tunes you sell

And you will probably lose

Seen stuff like this before, waste of time, you would be better using a new production name, people do it all the time
