Just sat here listening to Recca's mix from the last Timeless. Great mix but it's spoilt by the MC.

It got me thinking - What really is the point of MC's? All they seem to do is shout garbage basically. "Yeah, yeah, yeah", "C'mon", "big shout goin out" etc, etc, etc, etc.

I can't remember MC's anywhere up north in the early days - not Monroe's, not Quandrant Park, not Sequins, not anywhere. I certainly don't recall ever hearing an MC at any Warehouse do. Everyone went to places to hear the music - not some idiot on the mic shouting out the first thing that comes into their head (which is all MC's seem to do).

MC's were one thing that the rest of the dance scene, quite rightly, seemed to turn it's back on from about 93 onwards - thank f*ck. Apart from old skool. The ironic thing is MC's only became big on the oldskool scene when it was oldskool (i.e. the tunes were old), up North anyway.

Tunes don't need MC's - I'm fairly sure whoever wrote the tracks didn't think to themselves "I hope someone shouts out nonsense while this is playing in clubs". MC's just detract from the quality of a track.

I say - bring back the original vibe - no F*ckin MC's.

Rant over.

Totally agree with you, many a good tape is spoilt by some talentless cretin shouting "top buzz"

the only exception being a frankie bones tape where he keeps shouting "yes frankie bones" but the guy is a genius so he gets away with it.:)

Ive hated MC's for years on my tapes, however, I can see the appeal of a good one to some to whip the crowd up a bit.

I have a few tapes where the MC is on a bit (like 10 minutes) then nowt for about half an hour, then a bit Mc'ing - but proper Mc'ing. Thats Ok with me.

I have one tape from the gallery, with Mc DMO on tha mike - and the Mc'ing is great and makes a great tape even better. It wouldnt be as good without it on.

The thing is though you often get gobshite dickwads on the mike who love thier own voice too much.

What I never get, is why they dont stream a lead out of the mixers etc to a twin casette deck, one with and one without the MC input and let the punter make the choice.

An MC can be alright in a club, but on a tape its usually mingin.

See ya

from my experience with goodtimes ..

MCs dp make for a better atmosphere in a club (FACT !!!)

but they ruin tapes / cds . we sell more of our tapes without mcs than we do with em on . and the amount of peeps ive had say top tape but the mc ruins it is ridiculous ... and there reet cos at tehend of the day your buyin the tape for the tunes not some guy rantin and ravin over em .. ..

thats why now at GT we will NOT be havina full time mc , insted youll have a dj plus and mc for the hour , as we find that certain mcs and djs do work well together as they know each other styles etc etc ... .. ie was listen to the sy set from timeless and its a top set but wtf !!! totally ruined by the mc , because they just dont work together !! imo

mc from start to finish in a club is a big no no for me ..

what makes it worse i think on the timeless mixes is that mc irie is very loud on the recordings.im presuming he isnt as loud when at the club?i.e hes stood near the recording equipment.if not hes way to loud.

i think irie is one of the better mcs around oldskool alongside jfmc.

JFMC

have hired him on a couple of occasions now and imo hes id the best MC out there at the min .. his rhymes are out of this world .. and hardly ever repeats himself which for a mc dont happen very often !! lol and he seems to know a lot of the tune inside out , hence not singin thro voclas etc etc

Deffo agree with Clair - I had a few Frankie Bones tapes and I never minded a bit of Frank's self indugent banter every now and again.

I'd go with Ben on JFMC an all. Only ever heard him live and I always thought if you were going to have an MC, that's what they should be like. Like Ben says he seemed to know his tunes. At Carlos, Craig Carmichael used to even fade tunes out for JFMC to say summat at certain times. I don't know if they practised it but it was pretty good.

As for the MC on the Recca mix in question. At one stage he recognises D:Ream's UR The Best Thing, so when the breakdown comes he joins in the singing - WTF?! It's like Kareoke MC'ing or summat.

i've asked before, i think, but is it not possible to record just the output from the decks and not the mic..

mc's can be ok on the night but certainly not later on when you've got the tape/cd at home...

have them on the night just not on the recording..

Got to jump to the defence of Jimmy Irie - We had a laff with him @ Timeless - And I buzz off some o the things he comes out with at times. I think he has got a good voice sound for it. Might just be and my lot but we always find ourselves repeatin some of the rhymes in everyday life ha ha - mad

each to their own in it, for me

As for recordings - the option would be better!

MCs are good IMO when its live and its different from just hearin the tunes more excitin, gets you goin and adds an extra dimension -

The volume seems to be a lot higher on the recordings tho which doesnt sound right and probably causes a lot of negative feedback on reflection
