A bit of useful info for us.........coz you never know what's round the corner :S

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a dotor and am merely passing on information sent to me as I thought it might be useful one day. :D

IDENTIFICATION OF A STROKE

During a BBQ a woman stumbled and took a little fall; she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, the woman went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Her husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm she passed away) she had suffered a stroke at the BBQ; had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps this woman would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

Neurologists say that if they can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours they can sometimes totally reverse the effects of a stroke. They say the trick is getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the '3' steps, S.T.R. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S.... Ask the individual to SMILE.
T..... Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, e.g. It is sunny out today)
R ....Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Maybe this information wil save a life one day.

Lol at some of the comments!

On a serious note though, my business partner suffered a stroke recently at the garage. He was chatting to the lads in the workshop same as always, they said he was fine - then he wandered up to the shop where I was. I could tell something wasn't right, I spoke to him and he didn't answer, just stared at me as if he didn't know where he was. I sat him down in the office, took another look at him and dialled 999. I thought he was having a heart attack to be honest. Apparently if I hadn't done this when I did he would have been really in the shit. As it is, he has lost the use of his right side - his right arm is permanently disabled but he will get some use back with the rest. His speech is quite bad as well. He's still in hospital now over a month later, and he's only 40 which doesn't seem old enough to be having something like that happen :S
