How the hell do you train a cat to 'do its business' outside and not in the litter tray all the time?

Our cat will go outside for a while then come back and use the litter tray!! :S Its quite frustrating, the little sod chucks litter everywhere tryin to cover its mess up!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks! :)

tracy gradually bring litter tray closer to door - then as cats gettin older and goin to door you will recognise when she wants the toilet

:D
The tray is right next to the back door, shes 2yrs old but i reckon shes been that used to using the tray she doesnt even think about goin outside!! :S

they are only a tenner from argos

try removing the tray all together and getting a catflap of just leaving the backdoor open slightly then it will have to go outside!

well ive had my cat 12 yr now , and she never uses a cat littler tray , one reason being she dont have one . . lol as i was in the same situ as yr self was gettin sick of her using it from time to time , when she could just go outside . . so i just got rid of it , cats are very clean animals and many wont just shit anywere in the house as they like to do that cover up thingy after doin there bussiness . lol , and they is by far one of the most inteligent animals on the sly ;) my cat straight away learnt once the tray was gone the only option was to go outside , so when she needs to go shell go stand by the door to be let out , if theres no one in shell wait till there is . . :) :)

Cheers DeeDee, we've considered gettin one of those but thought they were dearer than that. :)

Ben - Sounds like the best plan of action, think i may start puttin the tray outside for a while and hopefully she'll associate outside with poo time! Only prob is the weather and she doesnt go out all night, infact she only goes out for a little while everyday, shes still not too familair with the surroundings plus i think she may be pregnant so im not keen on keepin her out too long.

Shes also got this habit of shittin over the edge of the tray, lol its great! i think i need to take drastic action, i thought id finished moppin shit up when my little girl stop wearing nappys!!
