Well Jonno......I thought I was reading my rant on the place from a few years back for a moment there!!!!! Very similar. I have it on relatively good authority that Melody House is actually closing. Its relocating somewhere near by, and downsizing though. From what I believe, the rent/mortgage for the place is becoming ridiculously high as Blackpool is under the spotlight for development and space (re the Casino debacle), and a few weekends ago, Phil didnt have ONE single customer even walk though the door that day - but to be fair, the football was on, everywhere was quiet. Somebody on here told me that he is selling peoples collection items off for them - so its the people using the renouned high prices, binding phil to adhere to them. How true this is, and how extensive it is, I dont know. His 'average' records NOT in the oldskool section were still like 6.99 each in some cases, and you can get them elsewhere for 4.99. You cant carry on like this..... My favourite record shop is suffering the same trouble......its faced a HUGE downturn in business, they have compensated by relying more on trade ins of scouse house and old 70's records which they THINK they can get a good turn around on - but its not working out, and now thier suppliers of NEW goods (like Amato Disco for example) dont want to deal with them cos they were poor payers and thus they werent going to provide them with a good service - waiting three weeks for some 'hit' of the moment is a death knoll for any dance music shop. If you dont catch it in its peak, its left to fester on the shelf....and all your stock comes old and unwanted, a burden, and if youre not prepared to cut your losses and get fresh, it just spirals downhil from there. My progressive house record buying has severely gone down, as the shop is just full of semi old dance toss from 2001, and the prog section is stale, and nothing new has arrived for months. I see whats coming out on Juno.co.uk and theres no sight of it. Its a real shame. I gather Phil @ melody is in the same boat - relying on second hand and a single genre to plug the gaps, and then when it doesnt work, rather than sell things off, they increase the price to compensate, and the downward spiral is formed..... So when Phil moves premises, I gather it will be a fresh new start. I hope he keeps his selection of adult video's though ;). Sirius.
