The move away from northern soul on the playlist at The Highland Room, Blackpool Mecca (now a pile of rubble :'( ) the music moved in two directions. Colin Curtis started to play a lot of jazz and funk and Ian Levine who started playing US Disco and Salsoul type stuff. Following the demise of the Highland Room Ian moved to Angels in Burnley and had a short residency there. I often repeat this but that was the first club night I had ever been to where the DJ did not speak at all and he kept the music continually moving - it wasn`t quite mixing but he had the right idea. He later moved on to the gay club Heaven in London for several years. Some disco was played on the revamped northern scene - the all dayers at the Ritz in Manchester (promoted by Neil Rushton who later owned Network records) played a unique mix of northern, disco, jazz and funk. I do not recall there ever being an ungerground disco scene in the UK - it was mainly in the gay clubs and often ruined by very camp cover versions and Hi-NRG. No doubt there were other pockets and clubs around the UK that I am not aware of.
