Indeed. I was just a little too young to experience McClaren's punk days but the fall-out from those as New Wave flourished in the early eighties was my intro into "different" music.
Along with Grandmaster Flash, seeing McClaren on The Tube with a set of silver 1200's and a mixer first showed me that you could do other things with records apart from just drop the needle on the record.... a hugely influential figure in music.

I first came across McClaren was when he was on tv demonstrating scratching and hip hop circa 82 ish with a couple of New Yorkers (would not know who). He sort of stood against alot of what I loved of the early 80's ie electronic and electro/late disco sounds. I did agree with his general hate of the mainstream crap and respected his views generally although maybe not always his taste in music.
A truely inspiring man.
